SC Dismisses plea regarding CBSE, ICSE Term 2 Exam Cancellation

SC Dismisses plea regarding CBSE, ICSE Term 2 Exam Cancellation 7

SC on Board Exam 2022 Cancellation: The supreme court of India has dismissed the plea and said that the decision should be taken by the authorities. Dismissing the plea, justices AM Khanwilkar: “These petitions create false hopes, let authorities take a decision. You can challenge that order.” Board Exams Cancellation plea was heard Matter heard by the bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and CT Ravikumar.

The Board exams 2022 Cancellation Plea was filed by child rights activist Anubha Shrivastava Sahai. In her plea, Anubha Srivastava requested the court to cancel upcoming CBSE, CISCE, NIOS and other state board exams.

The petition challenges the holding of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and different state boards exams in offline mode and seeks relief in the form of alternative assessment method for this year.

SC Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar to Hear Petition

Following the filing of the petition last week, the Supreme Court of India on Monday decided to take up the plea for an urgent hearing. The case has been allotted to SC Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar which will hear the petition and deliver a judgement that will decide if board exams 2022 are cancelled or not. The concerns of students are being represented by petitioner Anubha Shrivastava Sahai, who had demanded an urgent hearing of the case, which has been granted by the court.

Alternative Assessment Instead of Offline Exams

The plea filed before the Supreme Court seeks relief from the offline exams that are being held by CBSE, CISCE and NIOS Boards as well as several state boards. The plea says that due to the pandemic, education for students has continued in online mode, which is an alternative learning form as compared to regular classroom-based learning. Keeping this in mind, holding Board Exams 2022 in offline mode is not justified. The petitioner further argues that considering hardships faced by students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the boards should hold board examinations for classes 10 and 12 students through alternative methods of assessment.

Last year as well, following the outbreak of the 2nd wave of COVID-19, the CBSE and CISCE Boards had decided to cancel the board exams and instead adopted alternative assessments based on internal assessment and project work. However, for the 2022 session, the Board exam has been split into the bi-annual testing mode with Term 1 Exams already concluded for CBSE, CISCE and several other state boards. In light of this, it would be interesting to see what the SC bench decides with regards to cancellation of Board Exams.
