RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) recruit the agents and officers in several ways. One of the ways to recruit is UPSC Civil services i.e. Group-A, IPS, IRS & IFS Officers. This is a type of direct recruitment at Class I executive level. The other way to recruit is through the lateral deputation from the Officers corps of Armed Forces. The various functions of RAW are to counter-terrorism, counter-proliferation, gather foreign intelligence, advance India’s Foreign Strategic, and advise Indian Policymakers. How Raw Officers are Recruited by the Agency?

Previously, the RAW Officers are trained intelligence officers and they were recruited directly. These were the part of the external wing of the Intelligence Bureau. Mostly, the candidates have been recruited from IPS, IAS, IRS & IFS Officers. Also, they are recruited from the Indian Armed Forces but they are lesser in number. However, after the getting the allegations of nepotism during the appointments RAW in 1983 had created its own service cadre i.e. RAS (Research and Analysis Service) for selecting the talents from Group A Civil Services which comes under Central Staffing Scheme.   1. Firstly, the candidates are selected with the help of RAS and direct recruitment is done at Class 1 Executive Level from Civil services Officers who are undergoing the Foundation course at the Lala Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
  2. At the end of the course, there is a campus interview conducted by RAW.
  3. Based on their Interview and Psychological test the candidates are selected for a 1-year period.
  4. During this 1 year, they have an option to rejoin their parent service.
  5. But after one year they are permanently selected for the RAW (Research and Analysis Service).
  6. Another way of recruiting is lateral deputation from the Officers corps of the Indian Armed Forces.
  7. The Civil and Defense Service Officers resign permanently to join RAS.
