Shopian, 09 November: Mughal road, after reopening last evening for light motor vehicles, was again closed for vehicular movement due to snowfall, officials said on Wednesday.

The historic road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian, remained closed for traffic since early Sunday to Tuesday afternoon following snowfall at several places enroute including Pir Ki Gali (PKG), Mansar Mohre and Posha, news agency GNS quoted a police officer as having said. However, it reopened late in the afternoon yesterday but had to be shut again due to fresh snowfall at PKG, the officer added.

Similarly, the traffic officials here said that the traffic has been suspended on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari (SSG) road after snowfall in areas around Sonamarg.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities also informed that Jammu-Srinagar highway was through for the traffic.

Ramaban:  Snowfall in the upper reaches and heavy rains in lower areas have triggered cold conditions in the districts.

In view of heavy rains, all primary and middle schools in Ramban district shall remain closed, they said, adding that students are advised to remain indoors.  

Similarly, all primary and middle schools in the Kishtwar district will remain closed due to bad weather as directed by the district administration.   

However, all high schools and higher secondary schools in the districts will function normally, they added.

Srinagar, Nov 05: The Metrological department on Saturday predicted widespread rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir on 6-7 November

“Widespread rain and snow is likely during 6-7th in Kashmir and today weather will be generally cloudy at most places besides that rain/snow over higher reaches very likely to commence from today evening,” the MeT told the KNS.

“From 6-7th November, there are chances of moderate Rain/snow (over higher reaches) and very likely to occur at most places of J&K Plains of Kashmir, mainly South, likely to receive (2-3)inches of snowfall during 6-7th. Heavy Snowfall (2-3feet) very likely over higher reaches,” he said, adding that snowfall and low temperatures may led to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Jmu-Srinagar HW, Sinthantop, Mugal road etc. during 6-7th. Srinagar, Oct 30: Weather was dry in J&K during the last 24 hours as the Meteorological (MeT) office on Sunday forecast inclement weather during the first week of November.

“During the 1st week of November from 1st to 6th, the weather is most likely to remain generally cloudy with possibility of light to moderate rain/snowfall over middle and higher reaches of J&K at scattered places of J&K (forecast confidence >75 per cent).

“During the above period there will be a drastic fall in day temperature.

“Snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Mughal Road, Sadnatop, etc.

“Farmers are advised to harvest their agriculture produces, fruits, etc. which are prone to snowfall and low temperature,” the MeT department statement said.

Srinagar had 4.2, Pahalgam minus 0.4 and Gulmarg 1.6 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

Drass in Ladakh region had minus 4.9, Kargil minus 2 and Leh minus 3 as the minimum temperature.

Jammu had 16.1, Katra 14.3, Batote 7.5, Banihal 4.2 and Bhaderwah 5 as the minimum temperature.

“As per today’s conditions, for whole 1st week of November (1-6th) weather is most likely to remain generally cloudy with possibility of light to moderate rain/snowfall over middle and higher reaches of J&K at scattered places of J&K (forecast confidence >75%),” a meteorological department official said here.

He said during the period, there will be “drastic fall” in day temperature and there days will be colder.

Regarding probable impacts, he said, “Snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Mugha Road, Sadnatop, etc.”

The weather department also reiterated advisory to farmers and urged them to harvest their agricultural produce, fruits etc. which are prone to snowfall and low temperature.

Regarding the temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 2.6°C against 3.5°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.2°C below normal for the summer capital during this time of the year, he said.

Qazigund recorded a low of 2.2°C against 2.6°C on the previous night. The temperature was below 0.4°C than the normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he told GNS.

In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at minus 0.9°C against minus 0.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.4°C below normal for the south Kashmir resort, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 5.2°C against 4.7°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 2.2°C against 1.5°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 1.6°C against 2.2°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 0.8°C below normal for the north Kashmir place, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 16.0 against 14.6°C on the previous night. It was 0.1°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 4.6°C (below normal by 0.3°C), Batote 7.6°C (0.3°C below normal), Katra 13.7°C (above normal by 0.6°C) and Bhadarwah 5.6°C (above normal by 1.0°C). (GNS)

Srinagar: Weatherman on Wednesday forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall over middle and higher reaches at many places of Jammu and Kashmir.

“As per today’s conditions, light to moderate rain/snowfall over middle and higher reaches of J&K is very likely (upto75%) at many places of J&K,” a meteorological department official said here, adding, “no heavy spell is expected.”

Regarding the temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 4.7°C against 4.8°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.9°C above normal for the summer capital during this time of the year, he said.

Qazigund recorded a low of 3.4°C against 2.4°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.3°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at 0.3°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the south Kashmir resort, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 5.7°C against 5.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 1.5°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 2.8°C against 3.0°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 0.4°C below normal for the north Kashmir place, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 14.7°C against 13.4°C on the previous night. It was 2.0°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Srinagar: Rain lashed plains while upper reaches amassed fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir since overnight, officials said on Thursday.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded 13.8mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today.

He said Qazigund received 8.0mm, Pahalgam 13.3mm, Kupwara 13.2mm, Kokernag 10.6mm, Gulmarg 16.2mm and Banihal 5.4mm.

Reports reaching GNS said that Gulmarg, Machil, and other upper reaches including Sithan pass and Margan pass received snowfall.

Regarding minimum temperature, the MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 6.4°C against 5.0°C on the previous night. The temperature was 1.3°C above normal for the summer capital during this time of the year, he said.

Qazigund recorded a low of 7.0°C against 3.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was 2.6°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at 3.2°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the south Kashmir resort, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 5.3°C against 3.7°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.0°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 4.1°C against 3.5°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 0.4°C below normal for the north Kashmir place, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 18.7°C against 16.8°C on the previous night. It was 14°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 8.0°C (above normal by 1.9°C), Batote 9.4°C (0.3°C above normal), Katra 16.4°C (above normal by 2.3°C) and Bhadarwah 8.6°C (above normal by 2.5°C).

The weatherman has forecast light to moderate rain over plains and light snowfall over high reaches at scattered to fairly widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hours.

He said there will be gradual improvement in weather from this afternoon itself. He also reiterated that “there’s no forecast of any major snowfall for the next one week to 10 days in J&K and Ladakh.”
