Skippers Harmanpreet & Rizwan win ICC Player of the Month awards for September 1

DUBAI: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan won the ICC Player of the Month awards for September in women and men’s categories respectively.

Harmanpreet received the award for her memorable showing in the ODI series in England.

The Indian skipper beat her deputy Smriti Mandhana and Bangladesh counterpart Nigar Sultana, who also came up with some stunning displays.

“It was great to be nominated for the award, and to win it is an amazing feeling. To come out as winner when being nominated alongside Smriti and Nigar is very humbling,” Harmanpreet said after winning award.

“I have always taken immense pride in representing my country and achieving the historic ODI series win in England will remain a landmark moment for me in my career,” she added.

Harmanpreet had a memorable month not just with the bat but also as a captain, leading India to a memorable 3-0 ODI series sweep over England. This was India’s first series win in England since 1999.
She led by example during the series and finished as the highest run-getter with 221 runs at an average of 221 and a strike rate of 103.27.

In the first ODI, her well-paced innings of 74 not out guided India to a win while chasing 228. She followed that up with a splendid unbeaten 143 off just 111 balls in the second ODI, her second-highest score in the 50-over format.

Among men, Rizwan defeated Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel and Australian all-rounder Cameroon Green to claim the award.

Rizwan was in stunning form in September, churning out some sizzling performances in T20Is.
“I want to give my high appreciation to all my teammates as they made things easy for me. These achievements boost your confidence. I am happy with my performance and I would like to take this momentum forward in Australia,” an elated Rizwan said.

“I would like to dedicate this award to the people in Pakistan who are affected by the floods and climate change. Hopefully this will bring smiles on their faces,” he added.

UMRAN MALIK enters Indian Cricket Team for T20 Series against South Africa

Umran Malik

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir pace sensation Umran Malik on Sunday earned an expected India call-up for the upcoming five-match T20 International home series against South Africa starting June 9.

Umran has picked up 21 wickets in 13 games for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL but it’s his ability to bowl consistently at 95 miles per hour that has caught the imagination of all and sundry with calls for his immediate selection in top-flight cricket.

Along with Umran, Punjab Kings’ death overs specialist Arshdeep Singh has also earned his maiden national call-up.

As reported on July 14 by PTI, regular captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli, pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have all been rested for the white-ball series in which Rishabh Pant will be the vice-captain.

Rohit, Kohli, Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will all fly to England on June 15 for the one-off Test against England at Edgbaston from July 1-5 and will be joined by Cheteshwar Pujara, who has earned a recall to the 17-member Indian Test team after a stupendous show in English County Championship for Sussex.

While Umran has 21 wickets (before Sunday’s game), most of which came in the first phase when batters were getting used to his pace, it is understood that the selectors were far more impressed with Mohsin.

The Uttar Pradesh left-armer has taken 13 wickets from 8 matches at an astounding economy rate of 5.93 compared to Umran’s 8.93 in 13 games.

However, Mohsin’s dodgy hamstring made the decision easier for Chetan Sharma’s committee, which also picked Arshdeep especially for his death overs bowling for Punjab Kings.

India’s T20I squad:

  • KL Rahul (Captain)
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad
  • Ishan Kishan
  • Deepak Hooda
  • Shreyas Iyer
  • Rishabh Pant (vice-captain)(wk)
  • Dinesh Karthik (wk)
  • Hardik Pandya
  • Venkatesh Iyer
  • Yuzvendra Chahal
  • Kuldeep Yadav
  • Axar Patel
  • Ravi Bishnoi
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  • Harshal Patel
  • Avesh Khan
  • Arshdeep Singh
  • Umran Malik.

Umran Malik Will Play For India Very Soon: Micheal Vaughan

Umran Malik

Former England captain Michael Vaughan is highly impressed by Sunrisers Hyderabad pace bowler Umran Malik.

“Umran Malik will play for India very soon, If I was the @BCCI I would be sending him to play some County cricket this summer to help him develop first though,” said the former England captain Michael Vaughan on Twitter.

“Umran is fantastic. It (his performances) is no reflection of me at all. It’s all him at the moment. He has got amazing skills, he is showing everybody, bowling 150 kph. I am kind of living through him, wishing I could do it. But it’s all him at the moment. He is certainly somebody whom we should keep an eye on for the future,” former South Africa fast Bowler Dale Steyn said.

Robin Uthappa Concerned With Virat Kohli’s Mental Health

Robin Uthappa Concerned With Virat Kohli's Mental Health 2

It was only yesterday that Robin Uthappa spoke his mind when it came to IPL auctions. He said that the format or basically an auction system is mentally harsh on players; adding that the BCCI can move onto drafts system which is at play in other franchise cricket around the world, mainly: PSL and BBL.

On Tuesday, he again took up the issue of mental health among the athletes who have to perform day in and day out under pressure. He also cited an example of Virat Kohli and said it can get really tough for a top athlete like the former India captain. He said he hopes Kohli found someone whom he can trust and tell-all.

“Especially with athletes, there is power in vulnerability. You deal with it by expressing it. You find that one person who you feel comfortable with, who you completely trust, and where you know there’s not going to be any judgement. If you feel someone is off, then you ask them ‘Hey, how are you? Do you want to talk about something?’ To have that much empathy as a human being to ask ‘Is everything fine?,” said Uthappa in a chat on the show Mind Over Medals.

“I really hope somebody is doing that with Virat Kohli, because it’s very hard for someone like him, the kind of thoughts that must be going through his mind. For someone of his calibre to not score a hundred for three years, the ghosts that he must be dealing with must be immense. I truly hope that there is someone who he trusts completely that he’s having conversations with. These are very lonely battles that sportspeople go through,” concluded Robin Uthappa.

Robin Uthappa was picked by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) side in the 2022 IPL auction for a sum of INR 2 Crore.
